December 3, 2025 – A productive closed-door luncheon titled “Responsible Mining – Introducing Mining 2030” was successfully held in Beijing. The event, co-hosted by China SIF, the Norwegian pension fund KLP, and the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030, convened a diverse group of global institutional investors, asset management professionals, and senior representatives from the mining sector.
The session facilitated an open and constructive exchange on the critical role of finance in enabling a mining industry that operates responsibly, respects planetary boundaries, and contributes positively to social development. Participants engaged in a meaningful dialogue, sharing valuable insights and perspectives on both the challenges and the significant opportunities shaping the future of responsible mining.
With the rapid global increase in demand for critical minerals essential to the clean energy transition, attendees underscored the importance of aligning sectoral growth with robust environmental and social safeguards. Representatives from Chinese mining companies actively contributed to the discussions, offering on-the-ground perspectives on market conditions, operational challenges, and evolving expectations for transparency, governance, and community engagement. Their participation highlighted the growing commitment within China’s mining sector to explore pathways for responsible production and long-term sustainability.
Asset managers—both domestic and international—also engaged deeply in dialogue around investor expectations, risk management approaches, and the importance of credible data and standards to guide responsible investment in the extractives sector. Many emphasized that collaboration between investors and mining companies is increasingly critical to meeting global climate goals and ensuring supply chain resilience.
The Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030 was introduced as an important investor-led initiative designed to guide the industry toward a future where it maintains a strong social license to operate, meets societal needs responsibly, and contributes actively to economic development and environmental stewardship. Participants expressed strong interest in continued engagement with the initiative, recognizing its potential to support meaningful improvements across the value chain.
The active participation and shared commitment from both the asset management community and the mining sector were instrumental in making this luncheon a highly successful and forward-looking exchange, laying the foundation for deeper collaboration going forward.
The luncheon was part of the broader 2025 China SIF Week, a series of events dedicated to advancing sustainable finance and ESG integration in the market.
